| Many
companies will use a microsite as a way to
promote one product or service. Larger consumer orientated companies
may even include features such as games or special flash movies
on the site, which is often part of a greater advertising campaign.
For most businesses however, a microsite is not only a good
way of promoting one particular product or service, but also
a way of driving traffic through to the main company website
via links from the smaller site.
It is now common practice for companies to register a domain
name made up of an important key phrase, often based around
a particular product or service. A mini site is then built which
is highly relevant to this particular product (and key phrase).
Although pages on the main website should be constructed in
this way anyway, for a number of reasons e.g. constraints of
the existing website, not wanting to upset the existing optimisation
of the main website home page etc., having one or several smaller,
specific sites is a way of spreading the risk - not putting
all your eggs in one basket on the Internet. It may also be
a highly effective way of responding quickly to and targeting
niche markets within your industry. It may be good idea to have
a number of highly relevant smaller sites with a reasonable
amount of traffic and a high likelihood of conversion, than
to have just one large, general website that doesn't perform
well in terms of visits or conversion.
